Formvar enamel insulation is made from Vinyl Acetal resins produced as a smooth, uniform film. Formvar has excellent mechanical properties such as abrasion resistance and flexibility, and is suitable for continuous use up to 105 C. Formvar film will withstand excessive elongation without rupture making it an ideal insulation type for smaller magnet wire gauges. When stressed during winding, Formvar has a tendency to craze when exposed to certain solvents so coils wound with Formvar should be annealed prior to varnishing. Formvar is also well-suited for use in oil-filled, high voltage transformers. Formvar insulation can be mechanically (fine sandpaper) or chemically stripped during termination.
