Plumbing pipes are measured by the ID (Inside Diameter).
The first size number stands for the largest plumbing pipe it will fit.
The numbers after the description of the fitting describe the size of the fitting.
?? Plumbing Copper vs. Refrigeration Copper ??
Refrigeration pipes are measured by the OD (Outside Diameter). To convert from plumbing pipe size to refrigeration pipe size, add 1/8 for the thickness of the pipe. For example, a 1/4 plumbing pipe is the same size as a 3/8 refrigeration pipe and a 3/8 plumbing pipe is the same as a 1/2 refrigeration pipe.
