First and Foremost, my aplogies for the listing title. I did this in order that people with "Saved Searches" might also find out about this unique item up for consideration today.
This is only a Howard Reduction Gear auxillary transmission. This unit bolts on behind the main transmission with the purpose of lowering the tractor final drive speed while allowing the PTO to maintain a higher RPM.
This unit has been removed from a Ford 8N tractor. I have an identical unit in a Ferguson TO-20 and recently sold a TO-30 that was also equipped with a Howard transmssion. As this unit was removed from a 8N tractor it will also fit the 9N and 2N with no problem
This is greatly beneficial when trying to use a Roto-tiller behind your tractor. I have personally enjoyed being able to use reverse at a safer slower speed. The addition of this auxillary transmission will double your transmiision gears. You can go from a 3 spped transmssion to a 6 speed with two reverse speeds. Got a 4 speed trans? How about 8 forward gears and two reverse? Slower speeds and higher RPM for the PTO can also work on your Brush Hog too!
I will advise you up front. This transmission is / NOT / designed to pull stumps with and can suffer damage if you smack into a tree stump with it while using a brush hog. I have another tractor and have been using a Howard with it with no problems.
I have inspected the gears and they show absolutely no chips or excessive wear. If you look at one gear in the center it would appear to be 1/2 worn off to the untrained eye. This is in fact how the unit was built. This shaved gear allows the transmission to operate properly. This unit will also include absolutely all the hardware and parts to mount it.
I have a full set of photo's showing the removal of the unit and you should be able to install this with the photos that will be supplied via e-mail. If you need the photos printed out and mailed there will be a further charge.
I just recieved some barely readable installation instructions and will forward those. Basically this unit bolts on to the rear of the transmission housing. Remove the PTO shaft, split the tractor and remove the bearing retainers at the rear of the transmission. This unit bolts on in place of the retainers and comes with a shorter final drive shaft and a different style PTO engagement device. Lubrication is supplied from the main sump as this unit lives it's life 1/2 submerged in oil. The top bearings and gears are lubricated when the transmission is turning by fluid transferance from one gear to another. Simple and effective.
