TEKTRONIX TYPE 570 CHARACTERISTIC CURVE TRACER OSCILLOSCOPE
The Type 570 Characteristic Curve Tracer presents a graphic analysis of vacuum tube characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions. Calibrated horizontal and vertical deflections make it possible to accurately measure the tube characteristics shown on the face of the cathode ray tube. Front panel switching between two test sockets permits rapid comparisons between two tubes or between two sections of the same tube. Selection of matched tubes is as simple as flipping a switch and comparing the two traces once the proper patch panel connections are made.
THE OLDER TEKTRONIX OSCILLOSCOPES
We admittedly live in a throw-away society. If we happen to have a VHS device and it goes bad we immediately think of purchasing a new one rather than repairing the old one. I think this is because the industry advances so rapidly that it does not pay to repair an old VHS device since the cost of a new one, with new features and technology, approximates the repair costs of the old one.
Such is certainly not the case with the Tektronix Type 570 Oscilloscope. The 570 Tektronix Oscilloscope has easily repairable circuits and technology that was state of the art the day it was designed almost 50 years ago.
Trouble shooting the older Tektronix Type 570 Oscilloscope is fairly easy as Tektronix published outstanding manuals that makes trouble shooting a dream. Most of the circuits are DC coupled so trouble shooting is merely a matter of taking DC readings at critical points and comparing the measurements to the values published in the service manual. Waveform analysis, with a calibrated oscilloscope, might be required for the AC coupled circuits.
So if you are considering a quality Vacuum Tube Curve Tracer Oscilloscope with a proven track record of performance I urge you to consider investing in a superior instrument that has many years ago passed the early infant mortality failure rate of modern electronic devices. In 40 years of working with Tektronix Oscilloscopes I have found them to be the instruments on the market with the best design. All the resistors are power over-rated by at least 100%; voltage ratings on filter capacitors is at least double the voltage applied to them; diode breakdown voltage is usually double the applied voltage. In short, the 570 Oscilloscope was designed to give many years of faithful service and that service period has yet to expire.

The 570 was completely cleaned, inside and out. All the electrolytic filter capacitors were replaced with new ones. The original can type electrolytics were left in place for asthetic purposes. The electrical connections to the original electrolytics were removed so no dangerous voltages exist on the metal can. A bleeder resistor was placed across the filter capacitors of all power supplies over 100 VDC. All the paper and molded capacitors were replaced with new modern ones. All the tubes were tested and any showing even marginal conductance were replaced. The AC input plug was replaced with a modern instrument grade model. Feet have been added at the rear to protect the filter assembly if the 570 is stood upright. The case was completely sanded and spray painted with the Williamsburg Blue color used by Tektronix. The top mounted carrying handles have been replaced with new handles. All the knobs and the front panel were removed, cleaned, inspected for any defects and replaced if necessary. The felt padding in the equipment enclosure was replaced with new material. The 200 uA meter in the upper right corner of the front panel has been upgraded to a 1 mA unit. All scaling resistors associated with the meter movement were changed.
The instrument was then calibrated to Tektronix specifications using NIST traceable test equipment. The oscilloscope was then run with power on for 100 hours (5 days) and the calibration re-checked after the aging process.
The five curves are labeled with a folded piece of paper on the bezel. Each waveform is taken from a new 6AU6A RCA tube. Each curve was obtained using a screen voltage of 45 Volts and a peak applied plate voltage of 200 Volts through a 10 K series resistor. The curves were obtained while two 6AU6A tubes were being selected for a matched pair.
Curve 1) Plate current at 1 mA/DIV is on the vertical axis and plate voltage at 20 V/DIV is on the horizontal axis.
Curve 2) Screen current at .5 mA/DIV is on the vertical axis and plate voltage at 20 V/DIV is on the horizontal axis.
Curve 3) Control grid current at 2 mA/DIV is on the vertical axis and plate votage at 1 V/DIV is on the horizontal axis.
Curve 4) Plate current at 1 mA/DIV is on the vertical axis and control grid voltage at 1 V/DIV is on the horizontal axis. The zero bias line is the vertical line 5.7 divisions from the left most vertical graticule mark.
Curve 5) Screen grid current at 2 mA/DIV is on the vertical axis and control grid voltage at 1 V/DIV is on the horizontal axis. Zero bias line is on the right edge.
REFURBISHING SERVICE FOR TEKTRONIX TYPE 570 CHARACTERISTIC CURVE TRACER OSCILLOSCOPE
Mechanically this oscilloscope is in beautiful condition. The case has been freshly spray painted with a coat of Tektronix Williamsburg Blue paint. All the knobs, controls and mechanical components are in pristine condition.

Measures positive and negative DC operating voltages in seven ranges from 7 to 700 Volts, full scale.
The meter shows the heater voltage as a percent of the figure selected by the HEATER switch.
The TEST POSITION switch selects either of two devices or the two halves of one tube.
The TEST POWER switch removes all potentially dangerous Voltages from the patch panel for safety when connections are being changed.
All power supplies affecting calibration of the 570 are regulated for load and line Voltage variations. The heater, negative DC and plate sweep Voltages are unregulated as they do not affect calibration.
Type: Tektronix T-520-1/T52P1 phosphor is supplied unless another phosphor is requested. Type 2, 7 or 11 phosphors are available. Accelerating potential is approximately 4 KV and is regulated.
Edge lighted graticule provides either red or white illumination. Rotate graticule face plate to change color.
Filtered forced air circulation maintains safe operating temperature.
