In Excellent Repair and Running Condition
As one mechanic observed, "Cutoff saws live a hard life."
We have given this saw a good going over and replaced most all of the items covered in a complete overhaul (except for a crankshaft replacement). Then we replaced a few more items that are not part of a complete overhaul.
* Tillotson HS-279D carburetor
* cylinder/piston/rings assembly
* decompression valve grommet
* spark arresting screen and clamp
* starter grip and rope assembly
The saw is now in excellent starting, running, accelerating and idling condition, and it is ready to go back to work. (A starting note: Using a standard Stihl oil/gas mix, after the first start of the day, with the carb currently set about 1/8 turn lean, and using the decompression valve for easier pulls, it starts after a pull or two with the choke set followed by another pull or two with the choke off.) However, either for the sake of keeping the cost reasonable or because they had minimal effect on function, we are sending the saw back out with a few flaws:
* The flywheel/fan is missing a few fins.
* The saw was being operated without the right-rear rubber foot because the foot enclosure had broken off. The saw is functional without that foot, but we have devised a replacement.
* In the plastic shroud that covers the engine, one of the bolt holes has a metal sleeve with a 1/4" cover of plastic, and that cover has developed a crack.
The rubber foot and plastic crack are circled in one of the photos.
