Anti Static Mat - Portable, Low Cost 70cm x 100cm
I don't know about where you live, but here in West Texas, our average humidity is very low. Dust storms and high winds are the norm a large part of the year. This means static... lots of static. We use a combination of static control methods in our lab including humidifiers, bench static mats, floor static mats, wristbands, ESD safe tools, conductive containers and continuous monitors.
Hopefully you don't have the same static challenges we do, but if you are involved in electronic or computer assembly as a student, hobbyist or professional you should be employing at least some basic anti static measures to protect electronic components from damage. At the very least you need an anti-static work surface and wrist strap or band.
This is a medium sized 70cm x 100cm anti-static mat that is moderately portable. It can be rolled up and put away if you have a multi-purpose work surface (also known as a kitchen table) or left in place. The coiled grounding lead has both a banana plug and clip lead to temporarily attach to a convienient ground. Used in conjunction with our wrist strap it can greatly reduce the risk of damage to parts such as that several hundred dollar processor or the one and only sample IC you have for your project.
If you've checked prices at major online ESD suppliers and distributors you know these normally start at $60-75 for 24" x 36" conductive vinyl mats only without grounding cords.
