Hearing loss from industrial noise, power tools, heavy equipment, engines and a host of other sources is serious business. And not just at the job site either. Homeowners and do it yourselfers regularly expose themselves to power saws, chainsaws, grinders and even lawn mowers that can do irreparable damage to the ears.
Although our hearing seems to clear up after long exposure to noise sometimes the damage is done and it can never fully return. These hearing protectors can help eliminate such hearing loss.
So as not to complicate things too much these ear protectors are rated to reduce noise on the average of 23 decibels from a 90 db environment. (That is equal to a food blender Heavy Traffic 15 feet away Lawn mower- and most power tools- well above hearing conversation abilities. In an industrial setting these are rated as offering protection in the low to medium ranges.
Hearing damage occurs at around 85db continuous for 8 hrs. Reduce that by 23db (remember every ten db is 100 times) and you ll hear the misses calling you for your favorite dinner.
Lets talk about Gun fire. A shot gun Blast is about 130db and is what they call an impulsive noise. Comes fast ends fast. These hearing protectors are rated for continual noise abatement so their effectiveness is uncertain for impulsive noises. I know I use a very similar pair of hearing protectors when I shoot but I supplement them with some of those disposable foam inside the ear, ear plugs. The combination seems to work very well.
I use my hearing protectors around the house and I like this style because of their adjustability and the headband works well with face shields, hard hats, regular hats, safety glasses and the band can be placed behind the head for comfort.
If you are that guy with the 2 little orange flashlights standing in front of that 747; Then these hearing protectors are not for you. But if you are that homeowner (and you know who you are) who is slowly but surely killing his hearing then pick up a set of these. We were all tough and cool when we were young but you won t always be young so don t be pushing for hearing aids at 45. At this price you can t afford not too.
