Mini-circuits tsm-1/mil rf mixer 1-600MHZ +7DBM (qty.2)

Mini-Circuits TSM-1/MIL Dbl.Bal.Mixer 1-600MHz +7dBm (Qty.2)
On offer are 2 new (one pair, old stock) pieces of Mini-Circuits TSM-1/MIL Double Balanced Mixer. These are high quality, high performance, military grade professional RF mixers.
Formerly these were designed into high end equipment by the likes of Telefunken and Motorola, where money was less important than performance. These are a MIL spec version which receives extra 'G' & temperature testing and was often used in military comms equipment.
* RF and LO (local oscillator) range of 1-600MHz, IF of DC-600MHz
* An excellent 60dB! LO isolation (typical) with less than 6dB insertion loss
* Easily driven with a +7dBm LO signal (ie. 5mW at 50 Ohm) from a MMIC or regular transistor stage
* Passive diode mixers are symmetrical thus can both upconvert and downconvert
* Hermetic can, approximately 12mm x 6mm x 6mm, with 8 pins as two rows (DIL), 0.1" pitch
* Similar to SBL-1 style, but much smaller, approximately half each dimension (1/8th the volume)
* Hard to find - especially outside the US
Mixers are at the core of most RF projects and often determine overall performance, so it's worth using the best you can get. This pair would give a professional edge to many ham projects, from 160 meters-HF to past 70cm-UHF ... such as transverters, transceivers and test gear. They're particularly suited to a modern direct conversion receiver like the excellent R1 and R2 designs by Rick Campbell,available from the ARRL site as http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/pdf/t9301032.pdf. Plenty of other uses too - the ham literature is filled with circuits - a reasonably recent ARRL Handbook is a good place to start.

* TSM-1's are no longer available, but their close relatives the TSM-3's have the same pinout. Their characteristics are similar, though the TSM-1 has wider freq range, more like a TUF-1. Vacuum canned units are very durable and well screened, but obviously more expensive to make than their surface mount successors, so even now attract a premium.
No longer available new from MCL, sometimes found at US surplus dealers.
From MCL itself, the similar TSM-3's are listed at $26.20 US ( 17+) each, and that's for the non military version!
Starting here at a very fine price ...
RFPlus is a hobbyist with far too many components, accumulated over years of experimentation and development work, mostly in Australia.
Now located in the Southwest of England, UK ... the fishing town of Looe to be more precise ... I'm hoping to make a serious effort to dispose of the bulk of my electronic parts collection ... too many projects, too little time ... . It'll likely take a couple of years to work my way through, so if you're interested in 'The Art', particularly the RF side, please check back as there's a fair mix of both the utilitarian and the esoteric set to appear ...
I wish each and every one of you a fine year ahead in 2010 ... may your projects be successful with a minimum of unexpected smoke ... though of course if you ever need replacement parts you know someone to ask ;-)
