The champion hair picker
For sale is "The Champion Hair Picker" comprised of a wood frame, a wood and steel drum speckled with steel teeth and encased in an open wood box. A crank protrudes from one side and a geared flywheel from the other. On the picker in black paint it reads, "The Champion Hair Picker". It was manufactured for the Hulse Bradford & Co., San Francisco. Back in the day, the White Pass and Yukon Route frequently built their own sleighs. The upholstery used in cushioning the seats was made up of horse hair. The cushioning was purchased in large batches of dusty tangled horse hair mixed with straw and hay. The hair picker acted as a carding machine (a separator) removing the unwanted material. This is one of two that I know exsist, the other is in a museum in the Northwest Territory. This is a very unique piece of history.
