This item was acquired at a salvage freight sale recently, and we do not know much else about them. They were brand new but they had been removed from the original factory box. The patent information indicates they are for pivotable sash windows. We have no idea what windows they fit, but the little springs could be used for a multitude of unrelated applications where a compact spring with excellent memory is required.
These are very torquey little springs, and I value my eyesight too much to try unrolling one all the way. But according to the average diameter (1") and number of coils (12) multiplied by 3.14, they should be slightly over 36" long. The exact material is unknown. They do attract a magnet, although not as forcefully as ordinary steel.
