Hard work does pay off! We attended the Big Bird Classic (APA sactioned) at Pine Bluff, AR this past weekend and did really great! We took home a trophy and plaque for BEST OF BREED, we won BEST NOVICE from the big bird classic, and wond 1ST PLACE in the EGG SHOW! We entered a total of 10 birds including a pair of Wheaten Marans. It was a double show and doubled judged. Please check out the show page for all of our placements in the show!!

I am Vice President of the Marans of America Club and as a dedicated Marans breeder, I am breeding for show stock. I think it is far more important to raise a breed to a higher standard then just selling the eggs for money. I'm currently hatching out new chicks each month to improve the breed. Only the best that fit the French standard will be breed. I match up the corresponding roosters to the hens that would produce offspring that will better become the French standard. Every once in a while you still get a chick that has to be culled, but this breed is a working progress, and some still need to be culled in order to obtain a perfect Marans. Most people think of the French standard as feathered shanks. That's true, but there is much more. In order to raise show stock, you must not have any copper in the breast, no feathers on any toes other than the outside toe, no feathers on the inside or middle toes. Wings must not be spilt in the middle. There are certain criteria that one must meet in order to produce offspring worthy of showing. If a bird doesn't have what it takes, then it must be breed to correct it's faults if at all possible. Some are not possible and should be used for eating eggs and kept seperately from the other stock. Dark eggs are better, but only if the parent stock is as good as the eggs it produces. A perfect Marans, in my mind, is one that meets the French Standard and Produces begining eggs around 8-9 and lightens no less than a 4-5.
Spring is just around the corner and the temperatures are trying to warm up. Beat the spring rush and get your eggs soon. We won't be selling as many eggs, due to hatching and the hens are slowing down just a bit. We have added several C-1 Wade Jean to our already Wade Jean flock. They are absolutely beautiful and are producing some awsome babies. They are being fed the best feed that can be bought and I have my own secret recipe that I mix for them. Great feed is a must for any breeder to be able to produce hens and roosters with the essential vitamins and minerals, which help with better hatch rates and healthy babies.
I'VE TAKEN A PICTURE TO SHOW THE CURRENT COLOR, IT IS THE LAST PICTURE.
We strive in combining the best of the bloodlines in order to help enrich the color of the eggs and to breed to the French standard. All my stock has feathers on their legs and COPPER color down the neck (not yellow). Go to the website below and look up standards for brown-red and it will explain the correct conformation. Our begining eggs were graded an 8 and are shown as example of an 8 on the marans egg scale, shown on the club's website. All of my stock was hatch from eggs that were no lighter than a 7. Nice dark, dark, dark, chocolate eggs.

These birds are very calm and tame. They are very curious, and like to be by your side everywhere you walk. Very rare and sought after are these birds as there is only a hand full of breeders left in the United States, that have good stock. You may notice that the highest selling eggs are those that have feathered legs, and dark eggs. I only start with good, dark stock.
We take a lot of pride in what we do here and I will not sacrifice quality for any reason. Mother always said, "If you going to do something, do it right!".
As with any Marans eggs, the picture above is from the begining of the laying cycle. The eggs you receive will be a little lighter. I don't pick and choose, what pops out of the hen is what you get. I don't save the darkest for my self. When I sell, it's for you not me.
THE LAST PICTURE IS FROM (10/12/09)
I have 3 males with 15 females. I've been hatching eggs in my incubator for the past 3-4 months now and my hatch rate has been around 90%. Fertility is 95%. I have a 4 year old little girl that helps do all the feeding. They love to eat out of her hand! These chickens make excellent baby sitters. If you have something you need to do in the yard, just turn your child in the pen with a scoop of fed and watch them be entertained for hours! (Especially when they find an egg!)
I'll give you as many extra's as the hens will allow. Usually at least 2 or more. (have been known to give 6 just whatever the hens decide.)
Each breed is kept in seperate, very spacious pens. I collect eggs 3 to 4 times per day. Eggs are held at 55 degrees on an automatic turner, in a humidity control enviroment. I do not wash eggs because it reduces the chance of hatching.
