Explaining some lincoln welder terminology 101

REDFACE- Is a term used to identify certain types of welders. When I first started working on LINCOLN WELDERS -I assumed that the term REDFACE was only for the 1960s Sa-200 welders that had the orange/red faceplate. Well it has turned out that the term outgrew the original obvious description.
A LINCOLN REDFACE can be used to describe any LINCOLN WELDER that has COPPER SHUNTS (COPPER COILS). All LINCOLN SA-200 WELDERS before 1973 are REDFACES-this includes SHORTHOODS.
All FACEPLATE serial # from D-1 up to A-707588 are all REDFACES
In 1973 and 1974 not all, but a lot of the welders got ALUMINUM Coils-probably because the Aluminum was a lot cheaper-Most of these welders have been fixed since this point in time. They are Not to be refered to as REDFACES unless the shunts have been changed to copper.
LATER MODELS had copper shunts 1975 through 1979 are SUPPOSED to have copper shunts but I never have got a straight answer from LINCOLN ELECTRIC.But of course the people who assembled theses welders originally are more than likely retired. I have been told that they started using a alloy(aluminum and copper) and I was also told that the new wire was aluminum electroplated with copper. And people tell me they are redfaces and they are wound with copper. Which is TRUE? dont know myself yet.
